After 15 months of intense conflict that has devastated Gaza and claimed tens of thousands of lives, Israel and Hamas have reached a historic agreement to end the war and free hostages. The deal, announced on Wednesday, outlines a six-week initial ceasefire phase, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, and the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
Effective January 19, the agreement was brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States. In the first phase, 33 Israeli hostages, including all women, children, and men over 50, will be released. Negotiations for the second phase will begin 16 days into phase one, aiming to release all remaining hostages, establish a permanent ceasefire, and complete the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
The third phase will focus on the return of all remaining deceased individuals and the commencement of Gaza's reconstruction, overseen by Egypt, Qatar, and the United Nations. Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden took credit for the deal, stating it was the same proposal he first introduced in May. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the breakthrough, emphasizing the importance of a two-state solution for lasting peace.
The conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israeli border communities, has resulted in over 46,000 deaths and left Gaza in ruins. The ceasefire deal offers a glimmer of hope for stability in the region, potentially easing tensions across the Middle East and reducing fears of escalation between Israel and Iran-backed forces.
However, significant challenges remain. The future governance of Gaza is uncertain, with Israel rejecting Hamas involvement and also opposing rule by the Palestinian Authority. Additionally, billions of dollars will be needed for reconstruction, alongside security guarantees for Israel.
