Gaza Ceasefire Closer Than Ever as Palestinians Push for Peace Deal

A ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip is reportedly imminent, with significant progress made on most of its terms, according to a senior official from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement. The proposed agreement outlines a gradual cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Additionally, the final deal is expected to include a comprehensive prisoner-for-hostage exchange, signaling a permanent end to the long-standing conflict between Hamas and Israel.

While some contentious points remain under negotiation, officials are optimistic that these issues will not hinder the finalization of the agreement. The senior official expressed hope that the ceasefire could be concluded before the year's end, provided that Israel refrains from introducing new conditions.

Leaders from three Palestinian factions have stated that reaching a ceasefire is \"closer than ever,\" conditional upon Israel halting the imposition of new terms. This declaration came after a meeting in Cairo involving Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The factions reviewed recent developments in ceasefire talks and the prisoner exchange deal, reaffirming their shared commitment to ending the ongoing \"aggression\" that has affected the Palestinian people for over 14 months.

Discussions also touched on the formation of a community support committee aimed at managing the rebuilding and recovery efforts in post-war Gaza. The negotiations, facilitated by Egypt and Qatar with involvement from the United States, follow a U.S.-proposed plan introduced in May to resolve the conflict that erupted on October 7, 2023, after a Hamas attack on southern Israel resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths.
