South Korean Opposition Proposes Impeachment of Defense Minister Amid Martial Law Controversy

The main opposition Democratic Party of South Korea on Wednesday proposed an impeachment motion against Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, Yonhap reported.

Kim was reportedly instrumental in proposing the declaration of martial law to President Yoon Suk-yeol.

President Yoon declared emergency martial law Tuesday night in a televised address, a decision that was swiftly challenged by lawmakers. Early Wednesday morning, the emergency martial law was revoked following a veto by the legislative body.

The impeachment proposal underscores the escalating political tensions within South Korea's government, as opposition parties seek accountability for the controversial martial law declaration.
