China Sees 295 Million Domestic Tourist Trips During May Day Holiday

China experienced a remarkable surge in domestic tourism during the May Day holiday, with approximately 295 million trips recorded from May 1 to 5. This represents a 7.6% increase year-on-year and a staggering 28.2% rise compared to the same period in 2019, according to data released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Monday.

Domestic travelers spent a total of 166.89 billion yuan (roughly $23 billion), marking a 12.7% increase from the previous year and a 13.5% rise from May Day 2019. The five-day holiday saw many cities bustling with visitors.

Beijing, for instance, welcomed about 16.97 million tourists and generated tourism revenue of 19.62 billion yuan (approximately $2.7 billion) during the holiday. This was a 9.4% and 10.2% year-on-year increase in visitor numbers and revenue, respectively, reaching historical highs for the same period. Popular attractions in Beijing included historical sites, business districts, and parks.

Similarly, Tianjin Municipality in North China saw 14 million tourists, a 27.5% increase from last year, with tourism revenue reaching 12.2 billion yuan (about $1.7 billion).

Additionally, inbound and outbound tourism in China is recovering swiftly, facilitated by the resumption of air routes, entry facilitation measures, and an increase in mutual visa exemptions between countries. During the May Day holiday, 3.67 million tourists traveled inbound and outbound, with over 48% being inbound visitors.
