Chip behemoth Nvidia expanded its collaborations on Thursday with India's major firms, including Reliance Industries, and unveiled a new lightweight artificial intelligence (AI) model tailored for the widely-used Hindi language. This strategic move aims to tap into India's growing market.
The company is hosting an AI summit in Mumbai, the business capital of India, where Chief Executive Jensen Huang engaged in discussions with Mukesh Ambani, chairman of conglomerate Reliance, who is also Asia's richest man.
\\"Nvidia is AI in India,\\" Huang remarked. \\"In just one year's time, by the end of this year, we will have nearly 20 times more compute here in India than just a little over a year ago,\\" referring to the expansion of AI computing infrastructure.
From large enterprises to startups, Indian businesses are focusing on building AI models that support the country's diverse languages. This effort enhances consumer appeal and drives applications like customer service AI assistants and content translation.
Nvidia introduced Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B, a new small language model with 4 billion parameters, designed for firms to develop their own AI models. \\"The model was pruned, distilled and trained with a combination of real-world Hindi data, synthetic Hindi data and an equal amount of English data,\\" the company stated.
Indian IT services firm Tech Mahindra is the first to leverage Nvidia's offering, developing a custom AI model named Indus 2.0, which focuses on Hindi and its numerous dialects. Nvidia is also partnering with other IT giants in India, including Infosys, TCS, and Wipro, to train about half a million developers to design and deploy AI agents using its software.
Additionally, Reliance and Ola Electric are among the companies utilizing Nvidia's \\"Omniverse\\" simulation technology, enabling them to test factory plans in a virtual environment.
