China Pushes Back Against EU EV Tariffs, Calls for Negotiations

China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) has voiced strong opposition to the European Union's recent decision to impose anti-subsidy tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). Following the EU’s vote in favor of the measure, MOFCOM reiterated its stance, labeling the EU's actions as protectionist, unfair, and unreasonable.

The EU Commission announced on Friday that its proposal to impose definitive tariffs on Chinese-made EVs received the necessary support from member states. With 10 in favor, five opposing, and 12 abstaining, the EU is set to implement these duties for a duration of five years.

Expressing deep disappointment, the China Chamber of Commerce to the EU (CCCEU) criticized the EU's use of protectionist trade measures. Despite the current tensions, CCCEU highlighted that negotiation teams from both China and the EU remain actively engaged, striving to find a viable path forward.

MOFCOM emphasized that imposing tariffs will not resolve the underlying issues and urged the EU to delay implementing the tariffs. The ministry called for resolving trade disputes through consultation and dialogue, reiterating China's commitment to safeguarding the interests of its enterprises.

Technical teams from China and the EU are scheduled to resume talks on October 7, as both sides seek alternative solutions that comply with World Trade Organization (WTO) standards.
