Chongqing to Host 2nd Belt and Road International Skills Competition

The second Belt and Road International Skills Competition is set to kick off on June 24 in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China. Under the theme \"Skills Cooperation, Joint Development,\" the event has attracted an impressive 590 skilled professionals from 61 countries and regions, including 190 contestants.

Wang Xiaojun, an official from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, highlighted during a press conference that 18 competition categories have been established. These categories stem from the industrial development needs of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries, participant interests, and Chongqing’s hosting capabilities.

Of the 18 categories, 11 are aligned with the World Skills Competition, featuring disciplines like digital construction, freight forwarding, electronics, optoelectronic technology, information network cabling, floristry, jewelry, and hairdressing. The remaining seven categories include rail signal control technology, drone assembly, industrial robot system operation, coffee making, and internet marketing.

Reflecting on the inaugural competition in 2019, Wang noted that the first event in Chongqing attracted representatives from 44 countries and regions, marking a significant milestone in human resources and social security efforts to advance the Belt and Road Initiative.

“In recent years, we have actively fostered skills exchange and collaboration with BRI countries, international organizations, and companies,” said Wang. “These efforts have yielded significant results, particularly in cultivating skilled talent for overseas branches of Chinese companies and partner countries involved in the BRI.”

The three-day competition, running from June 24 to 26, is co-hosted by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the National Development and Reform Commission, China International Development Cooperation Agency, and Chongqing Municipal People’s Government. Compared to the first competition, this year’s event features higher standards, a larger scale, broader impact, and more diverse activities.
