China’s Transportation Boom in 2023
China's transportation networks expanded to over 6 million kilometers in 2023, establishing the world's largest high-speed rail, expressway, postal express delivery, and world-class port facilities, according to a report released by the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday.
Record-breaking Investments
The transport sector witnessed significant investment in 2023, with fixed-asset investment reaching 3.91 trillion yuan ($539 billion), marking a 1.5% year-on-year increase. This substantial investment has been pivotal in fueling China's robust transportation services, underpinning its economic growth.
Expansion of High-Speed Rail and Expressways
By the end of 2023, China's railway network spanned 159,000 km, including 45,000 km dedicated to high-speed travel. The road network grew to 5.44 million kilometers, featuring 183,600 km of freeways. Additionally, China added five new commercial airports, bringing the total to 259.
Enhancing Existing Networks
Beyond building new infrastructure, 2023 focused on improving existing networks. High-speed rail lines expanded by 2,776 km, and expressways grew by 6,394 km through new construction and expansion projects. Rural areas saw the completion of 188,000 km of new or rebuilt roads, enhancing connectivity.
Economic and Social Benefits
The robust infrastructure development translated into tangible benefits. In 2023, China's commercial freight transportation surged by 8.1% year-on-year, reaching a total volume of 54.75 billion metric tonnes. Passenger movement also saw a significant increase, with cross-regional passenger trips reaching 61.29 billion, up by 30.7% from the previous year.
The Ministry of Transport also highlighted the achievement of full postal service coverage, ensuring all established villages across China have access to essential postal services.
