Milano Cortina 2026 Unveils ‘Essential’ Winter Torch

The Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games have ignited excitement with the unveiling of the 'Essential' torch—a stunning fusion of Italian design, technological innovation, and eco-conscious craftsmanship that embodies the spirit of global unity and excellence.

During simultaneous launch events at the Triennale di Milano in Italy and Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, four celebrated athletes took center stage. In Milan, Olympic champion Stefania Belmondo and Paralympic fencing gold medalist Bebe Vio introduced the torches, while in Osaka, Paralympic champion Martina Caironi and figure skating bronze medalist Carolina Kostner marked the debut. Their presence underscored both a rich sporting heritage and a forward-thinking vision for the future of the Games.

Designed by Italian energy company Eni in collaboration with Versalis and crafted by Studio Carlo Ratti Associati, the torch captures a minimalist aesthetic with an iridescent finish that highlights the flame at its core. Offered in two versions—blue-green for the Olympic Games and bronze for the Paralympic Games—each torch weighs just over one kilogram and is made from recycled aluminum and brass alloy. With the capability to be refilled and reused up to 10 times, the torch exemplifies a strong commitment to sustainability.

Powering the torch is bio-LPG, a renewable fuel derived from waste materials such as used cooking oil and animal fats, produced at Eni's biorefinery in Gela, Sicily. An open burner design reveals the technological heart of the device, offering the public a rare glimpse into the mechanics that keep the Olympic flame alight. The choice of colors carries deep symbolism: 'Shades of Sky' evokes Italy's dynamic landscapes and the promise of transformation, while 'Mountains of Light' reflects resilience and strength.

This innovative unveiling not only celebrates Italian creativity and environmental stewardship but also reinforces the Olympic ethos of unity and excellence. Following the torch relays, the Olympic torch will be enshrined as part of the official collection at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. In the meantime, both torches will be on display at the Italia Pavilion in Osaka and at the Triennale di Milano until the Games conclude, inviting the world to witness a blend of art, technology, and tradition.
