Flag Football QB Challenges NFL’s Olympic Ambitions for LA28

As flag football prepares to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games, the excitement is palpable among fans and athletes alike. However, not everyone is on board with the notion of NFL stars joining the Olympic roster.

Darrell Doucette, a seasoned flag football quarterback, is making headlines with his candid stance. Doucette, 35, led the USA to a gold medal at the 2022 World Games and was named Most Valuable Player at the 2023 Americas Continental Flag Football Championship.

\"I think it's disrespectful that they just automatically assume that they're able to just join the Olympic team because of the person that they are,\" Doucette expressed. \"They didn't help grow this game to get to the Olympics. Give the guys who helped this game get to where it's at their respect.\"

The NFL has shown keen interest in the Olympic debut, with prominent players like Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts stepping into the spotlight. Hurts has been named a flag football global ambassador by Pierre Trochet, president of the International Federation of American Football.

Additionally, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Chicago Bears rookie Caleb Williams have voiced their intentions to compete for Olympic spots. Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has gone a step further, suggesting the formation of a \"Dream Team\" comprising NFL talent, reminiscent of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics where NBA stars led the men's basketball squad.

Despite the enthusiasm from NFL players, Doucette remains steadfast in his belief that Olympic selection should be earned on the field. \"We just don't think they're going to be able to walk on the field and make the Olympic team because of the name, right?\" he stated. \"They still have to go out there and compete.\"

The debate continues as the countdown to LA28 progresses, highlighting the balance between leveraging established talent and honoring the dedicated athletes who've been instrumental in elevating flag football to an Olympic sport.
