The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Executive Committee has officially announced that squads for the upcoming Euro 2024 will expand from 23 to 26 players. This decision, effective from June 7, allows participating teams to submit rosters with a minimum of 23 players each.
This expansion was initially introduced during the summer 2021 European Championships as a strategic measure to address the challenges posed by the pandemic. UEFA further reinforced this change at the Qatar World Cup in December 2022, recognizing the demands on domestic leagues in the lead-up to major tournaments.
While UEFA considered reverting to the traditional 23-man roster for Euro 2024, the extension of the 26-player rule has been warmly received by team managers, particularly those dealing with injury shortages. England's Gareth Southgate is among the managers who have expressed support for the expanded squad size.
Euro 2024 is set to take place from June 14 to July 14 across 10 cities in Germany. The tournament will kick off with a match between Scotland and the host nation in Munich, culminating in a thrilling final at Berlin's iconic Olympiastadion.
