China and Australia Strengthen Ties at G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

In a significant development on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G20) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi engaged in constructive talks with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong to enhance bilateral relations.

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, expressed appreciation for Australia’s steadfast commitment to the one-China principle. He emphasized the importance of respecting China's core interests and major concerns, highlighting the need to safeguard the political foundation of China-Australia relations and effectively manage any differences.

Under the strategic leadership of both nations, Wang noted that China-Australia relations have stabilized and are on a path of sound and stable development. This stabilization not only serves the common interests of both countries but also aligns with the aspirations of their peoples.

China is committed to working with Australia to build a more mature, stable, and fruitful comprehensive strategic partnership. In the face of a complex and volatile international environment, Wang stressed the importance of true multilateralism and urged major countries to resist efforts that undermine historical progress and promote disorder.

Wang also affirmed China’s readiness to collaborate with the international community, including Australia, to defend the victorious outcomes of World War II and uphold the international system centered around the United Nations.

Responding positively, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong highlighted the significant strides made in various fields of interaction between China and Australia. She pointed out the full recovery of economic and trade relations as a positive signal for future cooperation.

Wong reaffirmed Australia’s adherence to the one-China policy and expressed willingness to continue strengthening cooperation with China in areas that serve their national interests. She emphasized the importance of upholding the international rule of law and strategic security while jointly addressing global challenges.
