China and Iran Deepen Ties at Critical Stage During BRICS Expansion

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that China-Iran relations are currently at a critical stage, emphasizing China's readiness to enhance coordination and cooperation with Iran in both regional and international arenas.

Speaking on Monday, Wang highlighted China's strategic approach to bolstering bilateral relations with Iran, aiming to deepen cooperation across various sectors. This move is intended to contribute significantly to regional and global peace and stability.

The remarks were made during a meeting with Iranian Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani at the BRICS foreign ministers' gathering in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. Originally consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS welcomed Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as new members in August 2023, with their membership becoming effective on January 1, 2024.

Wang expressed his welcome for Iran's inaugural participation in the BRICS foreign ministers' meeting as a full member. He reiterated China's commitment to strengthening strategic coordination with Iran, leveraging the BRICS mechanism to reform and improve global governance. This collaboration aims to amplify the influence and voice of the Global South and steer the international order towards a more just and rational direction.

Ali Bagheri Kani echoed Wang's sentiments, stating that the enhancement of Iran-China relations will benefit both nations and contribute to peace and stability regionally and globally. He also emphasized the role of this partnership in building a more equitable international order and safeguarding the legitimate rights of developing countries.
