China is reaffirming its commitment to international peace and security by backing the prosecution of serious crimes through the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Libya. Dai Bing, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized this stance during a briefing with the UN Security Council.
Addressing the ICC's ongoing work in Libya, Dai stated, \"China's position on the ICC's work in Libya remains unchanged.\" He highlighted that the case has been under the ICC's jurisdiction since 2011 and referenced the prosecutor's roadmap for completing the investigation phase.
Dai expressed his hope that the ICC would adhere to the principle of complementarity as outlined in the Rome Statute. He stressed the importance of the ICC maintaining an independent, objective, and impartial stance, while respecting the judicial sovereignty and legitimate views of the countries involved. Cooperation with Libyan authorities was also a key point in his remarks.
Emphasizing the necessity of peace and stability in Libya, Dai pointed out that these are essential for delivering judicial justice. He called on the international community to respect Libya's sovereignty and territorial integrity, support internal dialogue, and promote a political transition without imposing external solutions.
Furthermore, Dai underscored that the ICC's activities should aim to strengthen unity among Libyans and avoid exacerbating existing tensions. In the face of global crises and challenges, he advocated for the ICC to apply international law consistently, avoid double standards, and uphold justice and equity on the international stage.
