Mutual Respect Key for Chinese Mainland-US Relations, Says Foreign Minister

In the midst of sweeping policy changes initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump, the Chinese mainland is emphasizing the importance of mutual respect in its relationship with the world's superpower. At a press conference held by Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, on Friday during the third session of the 14th National People's Congress, Wang asserted that mutual respect is fundamental for state-to-state relations.

Wang stressed, "Mutual respect is a basic norm governing state-to-state relations. It is also an important prerequisite for Chinese mainland-U.S. relations." Despite the Chinese mainland's repeated emphasis on mutual respect, the administration of President Trump has been intensifying efforts to contain the growth of the Chinese mainland since taking office.

In an attempt to "protect" what President Trump describes as "fair" and "just" trade, the U.S. has initiated a tariff battle against various countries, including its traditional allies and adversaries. Ignoring strong opposition from the Chinese mainland, Trump announced a second wave of tariffs on Chinese goods, adding to the cumulative 20 percent tax imposed during his first term.

The tension extends beyond trade. The Chinese mainland's successful deployment of cost-effective artificial intelligence tools has raised concerns in Washington about maintaining its hegemonic position. The U.S. Congress is under mounting pressure to pass legislation banning tools like DeepSeek on government devices, with some states already implementing such bans. Observers believe that the U.S. is keen to prevent the Chinese mainland from gaining the upper hand in science and technology.

Addressing these challenges, Wang conveyed a resilient message: "Where there is blockade, there is breakthrough; where there is suppression, there is innovation; where there is the fiercest storm, there is the platform launching the Chinese mainland's science and technology skyward like the Chinese mythological hero Nezha soaring into the heavens."
