Hainan Rebounds: Utilities Restored After Super Typhoon Yagi’s Devastation

In the wake of Super Typhoon Yagi, Hainan's resilience shines as the island province makes significant strides in restoring essential services. The powerful storm left a trail of destruction, claiming four lives and injuring 95 residents.

\"People have generally calmed down,\" stated Jiang Jianmin, deputy head of publicity at Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, during a press conference on Sunday. \"Now we are trying to recover from the disaster.\"

Efforts to restore electricity are underway, with the provincial electricity supplier prioritizing key infrastructure. Zhao Youcheng from the Hainan Power Grid Corporation emphasized the urgency, noting that 0.91 million out of 1.68 million affected clients now have power restored.

Telecom services are also being brought back online, with nearly half of the offline base stations reactivated by Sunday evening. Chen Xingwu, deputy head of communications in Hainan Province, advised residents experiencing weak cell signals to use landline phones or fixed broadband connections.

Water supply restoration is progressing in cities like Wenchang and Haikou, although approximately 63,000 people in 125 residential areas are still without water. Local authorities anticipate full restoration by midnight.

Proactive measures paid off as Hainan allocated 1.1 billion yuan ($160 million) before the typhoon's arrival. Additional support from the central government brought the total disaster relief funding to over 1.28 billion yuan ($330 million), ensuring a robust recovery process.
