As Typhoon Yagi approaches the southern shores of China, the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) alongside three other government departments have swiftly dispatched task forces to the provinces of Guangdong and Hainan. This coordinated effort aims to bolster typhoon and flood management in anticipation of the storm's landfall.
On Thursday, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters convened a high-level meeting with seven key departments, including the Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration. The session focused on analyzing Typhoon Yagi's development and forecasting the potential flood-related disasters it may unleash.
Experts predict that Typhoon Yagi could be the most potent typhoon to impact China's southern coast since 2014, presenting significant challenges for both typhoon response and flood control measures. In response, an MEM official has called for all pertinent parties to declare an emergency state, emphasizing the need for enhanced multi-departmental consultation and thorough assessment procedures.
To ensure a robust response, the headquarters has mobilized a total of 2,178 emergency rescue personnel and deployed 492 pieces of essential equipment to the major areas affected by the typhoon and subsequent floods. Additionally, the National Disaster Reduction Commission and the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration have allocated critical disaster relief supplies to Guangdong and Hainan. These supplies include folding beds, towels, and comprehensive family emergency kits, aiming to support residents in the face of the impending natural disaster.
