Persistent heavy rains have led to significant flooding across South China's river basins, marking a challenging year for the region. The Xijiang River in the Pearl River basin experienced its third flood this year on Thursday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Water Resources.
This recent event marks the 10th flood in the Pearl River basin since the beginning of the 2024 flood season, highlighting the intensity and frequency of the downpours affecting the area.
Rivers connected to Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake, China's two largest freshwater lakes, have seen water levels surpassing warning marks. Additionally, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River continue to experience rising water levels, exacerbating the flooding situation.
From Wednesday to Thursday, the water levels of 22 rivers across Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangxi, Zhejiang, and other regions exceeded their warning thresholds. These floods pose significant challenges to local communities, infrastructure, and the environment, raising concerns about the preparedness and resilience of the affected areas amid ongoing extreme weather patterns.
