In a significant step towards combating climate change, South Sudan unveiled the Watershed Approaches for Climate Resilience in Agro-pastoral Landscapes (WACRESS) project on Wednesday. This five-year initiative, backed by the United Nations, aims to enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities against the adverse effects of climate change while simultaneously restoring critical ecosystems.
With an investment of $33 million, WACRESS is set to positively impact over 75,000 people across South Sudan. The project focuses on restoring more than 15,000 hectares of land, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and improving water management systems. By integrating watershed management with agro-pastoral practices, the project seeks to create a sustainable environment that supports both the livelihoods of local communities and the health of the ecosystem.
WACRESS not only addresses the immediate challenges posed by climate variability but also lays the groundwork for long-term sustainability and economic stability in the region. As South Sudan continues to navigate the complexities of climate change, initiatives like WACRESS are crucial in building a resilient future for its people and natural landscapes.
