China Calls for International Oversight of Japan’s Fukushima Wastewater Release

China has strongly opposed Japan's ongoing discharge of nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean. A Chinese envoy emphasized the need for enhanced international supervision to ensure the safety of the marine environment and protect global health.

Since February 28, Japan has been releasing over 23,000 tonnes of contaminated wastewater, despite significant opposition from local fishermen, residents, and the international community. On Monday, Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), addressed the agency's board of governors, criticizing Japan's actions as unprecedented and harmful beyond its own jurisdiction.

Li highlighted that Japan’s wastewater discharge threatens the integrity of the global nuclear safety system. By seeking endorsement from the IAEA, Japan has, according to Li, undermined the agency’s credibility. He urged Japan to halt the release and collaborate with international stakeholders to establish strict and effective monitoring mechanisms.

China has taken a leading role in advocating for stringent international oversight, aiming to benefit the marine ecosystem and human health worldwide. Li pointed out that China's proactive stance has been instrumental in the IAEA Secretariat's decision to implement international monitoring arrangements for the wastewater discharge.

Furthermore, Li raised concerns about the legitimacy, safety, and long-term reliability of Japan’s wastewater purification processes. He criticized the management practices of the Tokyo Electric Power Company, operator of the Fukushima plant, citing incidents like earthquakes and equipment leaks that have exacerbated the situation.

Emphasizing that wastewater discharge is both a scientific and ethical issue, China called on Japan to address domestic and international concerns seriously. Li assured that China is committed to improving communication and cooperation with all parties involved to restore clean and safe oceans for people around the globe.
