Baiyangdian Lake, a significant wetland in the northern part of the Chinese mainland, has become a vibrant sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts. As of the end of February, local authorities reported that 276 wild bird species have been spotted at the lake, marking an impressive increase of 70 species since the establishment of the Xiongan New Area in 2017.
Among these diverse species, 12 are under first-class national protection, including the rare Baer's pochard and the majestic great bustard. Additionally, the wetland is home to 48 species under second-class national protection, such as the elegant whooper swan.
Tian Yongchang from the natural resources bureau of Anxin County highlighted the concerted efforts to enhance bird protection in the area. \"We have designated nine avian habitats within the wetland to ensure better protection for these birds,\" he explained. \"Furthermore, we've installed clear signage and an intelligent habitat monitoring system to support our conservation initiatives.\"
The growth in bird species at Baiyangdian Lake not only underscores the success of these environmental measures but also enhances the region's appeal for nature lovers, researchers, and eco-tourists alike.
