Beijing’s Green Leap: 2024 Plans to Expand Parks and Urban Spaces

Beijing is taking significant strides towards a greener future in 2024. According to the Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau's recent work conference, the city has set an ambitious goal: 91 percent of residents will have access to parks and small green areas within a 500-meter radius of their homes.

Under the leadership of Gao Dawei, head of the bureau, Beijing plans to complete afforestation of 10,000 mu (approximately 666.67 hectares) and add an additional 200 hectares of urban green space. These initiatives are part of the city's broader vision to transform into a garden city nestled in forests, enhancing the quality of life for its citizens and promoting sustainability.

The expansion of green spaces not only provides recreational areas for residents but also contributes to environmental benefits such as improved air quality and urban cooling. By focusing on accessible greenery, Beijing is setting a benchmark for other major cities aiming to balance urban development with environmental stewardship.
