China’s Air and Water Quality See Major Improvements in 2023

China has made remarkable strides in enhancing its ecological environment in 2023, showcasing significant improvements in both air and water quality. These advancements are the result of sustained anti-pollution efforts and increased investments in sustainable green development.

Air Quality Enhancements

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment reported that the average density of PM2.5 in 339 Chinese cities at and above prefecture-level stood at 30 micrograms per cubic meter in 2023. This figure is not only below the annual target of 32.9 micrograms per cubic meter but also represents a 16.7 percent decrease from the 2019 levels. Additionally, the proportion of days with good air quality in these cities reached an impressive 85.5 percent last year, reflecting the effectiveness of the implemented anti-pollution measures.

Water Quality Improvements

In terms of water quality, the data revealed that 89.4 percent of monitored watercourses maintained fairly good surface water quality, classified at or above Grade III in the country's five-tier water quality system. This marks a 1.5 percentage point increase compared to the previous year. The share of surface water below Grade V, the lowest quality level, remained steady at 0.7 percent, indicating consistent efforts to control water pollution.

Looking Ahead

These positive trends in air and water quality underscore China's commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. By continuing to invest in green initiatives and enforcing stringent pollution controls, China aims to further improve its ecological footprint, benefiting both its citizens and the global community.
