AI’s Role in Bridging the Digital Divide in the Global South

Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands at the forefront of global technological innovation, offering unprecedented opportunities to address pressing challenges. However, as AI advances, there's a growing concern that it may exacerbate existing national disparities and widen the social development gap.

The Global South finds itself at a pivotal moment, balancing the promise of the Industry 4.0 era with the pressing need to overcome the digital divide and intelligence gap. Leveraging AI as a strategic asset could unlock new international competitive advantages, but it requires careful navigation of both opportunities and challenges.

On April 28, CGTN's Wang Guan hosted a panel of experts in Shanghai to delve into these dynamics. Joining him were Muhammad Sadiq, Central Program Manager at the National Center of Artificial Intelligence; Thorsten Jelinek, Europe Director and Senior Fellow at Taihe Institute; Arthur Goldstuck, Founder and CEO of World Wide Worx; and Brian Tse, Founder and CEO at Concordia AI and Policy Affiliate at the Center for the Governance of AI at Oxford University's Future of Humanity Institute. Together, they explored how the Global South can harness AI for sustainable growth while addressing the risks of deepening the digital divide.

The discussion highlighted the critical role of the Chinese mainland in spearheading digital economy innovation among Global South nations. Emphasizing collaboration over competition, the experts advocated for a new paradigm in global governance and AI development that avoids zero-sum outcomes. By fostering partnerships and sharing knowledge, the Global South can ensure that AI advancements lead to inclusive and equitable progress for all.
