Spain’s Olive Oil Industry Eyes the Chinese Mainland Market

Spain has long been the world's olive oil kingdom, producing around 1.6 million tonnes annually – about half of global output – and anchoring a vital pillar of its economy.

Recent U.S. tariff policies have disrupted global trade markets, posing unprecedented challenges for Spanish producers. In response, exporters are turning their sights to the market in the Chinese mainland as a promising frontier.

Rafael Pico Acevedo, deputy director of the Spanish Olive Oil Exporters Association, emphasizes that China is an extremely important market and a key focus for the industry's future growth.

By diversifying into the Chinese mainland, Spain's olive oil sector aims to offset trade pressures and tap into new consumer bases. This strategic pivot demonstrates how agile businesses can adapt to shifting policies and explore fresh opportunities on the world stage.
