In a war-torn corner of northern Syria, martial arts has become an unexpected lifeline for a group of orphans and displaced children. Their teacher? Fadel Othman, a kung fu master who lost his leg to an artillery shell in 2015 but found new purpose through discipline and determination.
Now 34, Othman began training at age 12 and refused to let his injury end his passion. After undergoing three years of medical treatment in Turkey, he returned to Syria adapted to prosthetic mobility and established a multi-level kung fu club. His students – many orphaned by conflict or separated from family – learn physical defense skills while building mental resilience through what he calls \"the poetry of movement.\"
\"Every kick they master is a step away from despair,\" Othman told local media, emphasizing how martial arts helps children process trauma. The club has trained 120 students since 2020, with some competitors now participating in regional tournaments through Turkey-based sports organizations.
