As the U.S. COVID-19 vaccine rollout faces logistical hurdles, low-income seniors remain disproportionately affected by accessibility challenges. A Washington, D.C.-based non-profit is stepping up to address this gap, leveraging tech tools and community partnerships to guide vulnerable residents through registration processes.
\"Many seniors lack reliable internet access or struggle with complex online systems,\" said Maria Chen, founder of the initiative. Her team combines multilingual hotline support with doorstep assistance, prioritizing neighborhoods with high poverty rates. Over 1,200 appointments have been facilitated since January through collaboration with local clinics.
The effort highlights how grassroots organizations are complementing national vaccination campaigns, particularly in communities where 37% of residents over 75 live below the poverty line according to D.C. health data. Similar models are being adopted by groups in eight other cities.
