In the first episode of \"The Faces,\" CGTN introduces Rehmat Ali from Pakistan. He shares his inspiring experience as a doctor involved in the relocation of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) project.
The Karakoram Highway, also known as the Friendship Highway in China, was initiated in 1966 and completed in 1979 through close cooperation between China and Pakistan. Stretching 1,032 kilometers, it connects Xinjiang, China, to Thakot, Pakistan.
Rehmat Ali’s connection to the KKH project runs deep. In 1968, the highway was extended to his hometown in the Besham district of Shangla. His father, then a 10-year-old boy, decided to work on the project from Thakot to Chilas. Despite his young age, he contributed by assisting with cooking for the Chinese engineers, laying the foundation for a legacy of collaboration.
Today, Rehmat continues his family’s legacy by contributing his medical expertise to ensure the well-being of those involved in the ongoing development and maintenance of the highway. His story highlights the enduring partnership between China and Pakistan, fostered by the Belt and Road Initiative launched in 2013.
Through personal stories like Rehmat’s, CGTN showcases the value of life in Chinese companies and the positive impact of deepening international ties.
