China has sharply criticized the United States for imposing new investment restrictions, declaring that such measures will ultimately harm U.S. economic interests and damage its international reputation. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made these remarks during a regular press briefing on Monday, addressing a memorandum released by the U.S. on Friday that imposes further limitations on two-way investments.
Lin condemned the memorandum for labeling China as a \"foreign adversary\" on national security grounds and implementing various discriminatory measures. \"We strongly deplore and firmly oppose this and have lodged serious protests with the U.S. side,\" he stated.
The spokesperson emphasized that the tightening of security reviews targeting Chinese investments in the United States undermines the confidence of Chinese companies looking to invest in the U.S. market and distorts the flow of investment between the two nations. Lin argued that increasing restrictions on U.S. investments in China interferes with the independent decision-making of American companies.
China urged the United States to adhere to international investment and trade rules, respect market economy laws, and cease politicizing economic and trade issues. \"China urges the United States to abide by international investment and trade rules, respect the laws of market economy, and stop politicizing and weaponizing economic and trade issues,\" Lin reiterated.
Addressing the broader implications, Lin stated that the United States' actions, particularly the restrictions on China's shipbuilding industry and other sectors, are driven by domestic political interests. He accused the U.S. of abusing the Section 301 investigation mechanism, violating WTO rules, and damaging the multilateral trading system. \"China is strongly dissatisfied with this and firmly opposes it,\" he added.
Concluding his remarks, Lin called on the United States to respect facts and multilateral rules, and to immediately halt its current policies. He assured that China would take all necessary measures to defend its legitimate rights and interests in response to the U.S. restrictions.
