China’s Bozhong 26-6 Oilfield Begins Billion-Tonne Production

China's energy sector reaches a new milestone as the state-owned CNOOC announces production launch at its Bozhong 26-6 Oilfield in the Bohai Sea. The first phase of this billion-tonne project features advanced offshore infrastructure, including an unmanned wellhead platform, aiming for peak production of 22,300 barrels daily by 2025.

Spanning shallow waters 20 meters deep, the field contains 200 million cubic meters of light crude oil trapped in rare metamorphic rock reservoirs – the largest such deposit globally. Engineers completed development in just three years using standardized modular construction, accelerating China's strategy to convert energy reserves into operational output.

Liu Jingliang, CNOOC Tianjin's project director, confirmed 33 phase-one wells will soon reach full capacity. The Bohai basin, home to over 50 active energy fields, continues driving China's energy security efforts with 600 million tonnes of cumulative production since 2021.

While expanding fossil fuel infrastructure, the project highlights China's technical innovation in deep-sea energy extraction. As global debates around energy transition intensify, developments like Bozhong 26-6 demonstrate how major economies balance immediate energy needs with long-term sustainability challenges.
