In a recent press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that China and India, as two major developing countries and emerging economies, should prioritize development and cooperation to rejuvenate their bilateral relationship.
Guo made these remarks in response to Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s speech, where Jaishankar highlighted that India-China relations significantly impact both nations' prospects and the global order, indicating a long-term approach in managing bilateral ties.
“As two ancient civilizations, major developing countries and emerging economies, China and India should focus on development and cooperation,” Guo stated. He further explained that such an approach serves the fundamental interests of over 2.8 billion people, aligns with the aspirations of countries in the region, and supports the growth of the Global South, contributing to regional and global peace and prosperity.
Guo underscored the need for both nations to fulfill the important common understandings reached by their leaders, viewing each other as development opportunities and cooperation partners rather than threats or competitors. “We need to view and handle the bilateral relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective, bring the relations back to the track of healthy and stable development, and find the right path for big, neighboring countries to live in harmony and develop side by side,” he added.
The spokesperson also highlighted the importance of adhering to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, practicing genuine multilateralism, advocating for an equal and orderly multipolar world, and supporting universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization. Guo concluded by emphasizing that China and India should make greater contributions to safeguarding and promoting world peace, stability, development, and prosperity.
