A powerful magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Dingri County in the city of Xigaze, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, at 9:05 a.m. on Tuesday (Beijing Time), resulting in nine fatalities, according to China Media Group.
The quake caused a house to collapse in Tonglai Village, Changsuo Town of Dingri in Xigaze, also known as Shigatse. Residents were shaken by the strong tremors, with the epicenter located at 28.5 degrees north latitude and 87.45 degrees east longitude. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, increasing its impact, as reported by the China Earthquake Networks Center.
The seismic activity was felt beyond China's borders, with strong tremors experienced in the Kathmandu Valley of neighboring Nepal. As of 10 a.m., the region continued to experience aftershocks, the strongest of which reached a magnitude of 4.4.
Authorities are assessing the damage and coordinating rescue efforts to assist those affected by the disaster. The community is rallying together in the aftermath, showcasing resilience in the face of natural calamities.
