In an impressive display of skill and determination, Shang Juncheng of the Chinese mainland advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP Hong Kong Open on Thursday. At just 19 years old, Shang secured a decisive victory against Spain's 7th seed Pedro Martinez with a score of 6-3, 6-1, marking his fifth ATP Tour last eight appearance.
Despite Martinez holding a higher world ranking of 43 compared to Shang's 50, the young talent showcased his growth by overcoming previous challenges. The duo had previously faced each other twice on clay courts, with Martinez emerging victorious in both encounters. However, this hard court showdown told a different story.
Shang dominated the first set, holding all four of his service games before breaking Martinez's serve in the eighth game to lead 5-3. He then sealed the set with a love game, setting a strong foundation for his momentum. The second set saw Shang convert two straight break points early on, building a 4-0 advantage and ultimately securing the match with his fourth break.
Reflecting on his performance, Shang stated, \"After 3-3, there was a big change in speed from my side. I was playing with more confidence and swinging much harder, the winners were coming and my serves were fast. I started tight, but finished strong. I could start more confidently – hit my forehands and step in more. But overall, it was a nine out of 10.\"
Looking ahead, Shang is set to face Hungary's Fabian Marozsan in the quarterfinals. Marozsan recently caused an upset by defeating the tournament's top seed and reigning champion Andrey Rublev of Russia in a gripping three-set match.
Marozsan shared his enthusiasm, saying, \"This was a big win for me … Andrey is a great player. It is not easy for me [with the crowd against him]. Andrey won this tournament last year, everyone loves him; Jerry is one of the fans' favorites here … it's a little bit like the Davis Cup, with everyone pushing your opponent. But I have to focus on myself and play my best.\"
As the tournament progresses, fans eagerly await the upcoming matches, anticipating more thrilling performances from these rising stars.
