56 Chinese Cultural Relics Repatriated from Italy Through Joint Efforts

In a significant move to preserve cultural heritage, Italy has returned 56 cultural relics to the Chinese mainland. This repatriation marks a successful collaboration under the bilateral agreement between China and Italy aimed at preventing the illicit import, export, and transfer of cultural property.

The process began with Italy notifying China in October 2022 of three suspected Chinese cultural relics, followed by an additional 53 items in April 2024. These relics were seized based on suspicions of unauthorized transfer.

Following comprehensive expert evaluations and legal assessments, the Chinese mainland formalized a request for the return of these artifacts through diplomatic channels. Demonstrating mutual respect and commitment to cultural preservation, Italy agreed to repatriate all 56 objects.

This repatriation not only strengthens the cultural ties between China and Italy but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding humanity's shared heritage.
