Typhoon Kong-rey Set to Smash Taiwan and Flood Shanghai with Record Rain

Typhoon Kong-rey, the 21st typhoon of this year, is expected to make landfall along the eastern coast of Taiwan island between noon and evening on Thursday. According to the China Meteorological Administration, the typhoon will gradually shift northeast towards the mainland, specifically impacting the coastal areas of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fujian provinces, as well as Shanghai.

Shanghai is bracing for rainfall between 120 and 180 millimeters, with maximum hourly rainfall rates of 40 to 70 millimeters. This could mark the most extreme precipitation in November in the city since 1981.

The meteorological agency in Taiwan issued a land warning early Wednesday morning. Heavy rain advisories are in effect from Wednesday evening through early Thursday for the mountainous regions of Yilan and Hualien counties. Hualien is forecast to receive over 900 millimeters of rainfall on Thursday, the highest on the entire island.

In response to the impending typhoon, multiple airlines have issued notices of delays, rescheduling, or cancellations of international flights to and from Taiwan.
