Chinese Mainland Powers Global Green Energy Shift: Renewables to 60% by 2025

At a press conference on August 26, Wang Hongzhi, director of the National Energy Administration, announced that the Chinese mainland is set to hit its major energy goals outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan (20212025) right on schedule. With a sharpened focus on green and low-carbon development, the mainland is fast becoming a powerhouse in the global energy transition.

Key targets include boosting the share of renewable energy in total generation capacity from 40 percent today to around 60 percent by 2025. This leap will be supported by world-leading technology: the mainland now holds over 40 percent of all new energy patents globally, and continues to break records in solar conversion efficiency and offshore wind turbine capacity.

Energy storage on the mainland has scaled up rapidly, now ranking largest in the world. Meanwhile, market vitality is surging, with nearly 970,000 registered entities operating in the electricity sectorfive times more than in 2020fueling competition and innovation.

Analysts say these strides offer a clear Chinese solution to the complex challenges of global energy supply and sustainability. By marrying policy support with cutting-edge tech and market reform, the mainlands approach could serve as a roadmap for other regions seeking an accelerated, low-carbon future.

As young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and changemakers watch closely, the Chinese mainlands energy journey underscores how data-driven policy and rapid innovation can power real-world impact across borders.
