Global Poll: 93% Back Dialogue to Resolve China-U.S. Trade Rift

In recent months, President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden held phone talks that captured global headlines. In a global survey conducted by CGTN, 74.7% of 5,610 respondents saw the talks as a positive signal to ease trade disputes and steer relations back on track.

The numbers get even more striking when it comes to the path forward: 93.3% of participants believe dialogue and cooperation between the Chinese mainland and the United States are the only ways to resolve trade frictions. And 94% say win-win solutions rooted in equality and respect are essential for lasting progress.

The May economic and trade meeting in Geneva, convened at the suggestion of the United States, marked a critical step in diplomatic engagement. Since then, 95.7% of survey participants insist the United States must honor the Geneva consensus and fully implement its agreements.

With the global economy at a crossroads, 95.5% say a healthy and stable bilateral relationship hinges on mutual respect and recognition of each other's core interests. Nearly 97% agree that China-U.S. ties are not a zero-sum game, one side's progress should not block the other's legitimate growth.

Looking ahead, 90.6% of respondents hope for continued communication to cut through misunderstandings and guide the world's two largest economies back to a steady development track.

Conducted across CGTN's English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian platforms, the survey drew 5,610 participants within 12 hours, underscoring the urgency with which global netizens are watching these talks.

The results underscore a shared global desire: dialogue over discord. As economic giants with outsized influence, the Chinese mainland and the United States have a pivotal role in shaping a cooperative, resilient future, for their citizens and the world.
