Xinjiang’s Cotton Production Surges to Record High in 2024

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region achieved a remarkable milestone in 2024, producing nearly 5.69 million tonnes of cotton. This marks an increase of 574,000 tonnes compared to the previous year, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The region alone contributed 92.2% of China's total cotton output this year, setting a new record. The expansive cotton planting area in Xinjiang reached nearly 36.72 million mu (2.45 million hectares), reflecting a 3.3% growth from the previous year.

Enhancements in agricultural practices have played a pivotal role in this surge. The average cotton yield in Xinjiang rose to 154.9 kg per mu, a 7.6% increase year-on-year. Modern agricultural machinery adoption has been instrumental, with the mechanization rate of cotton planting hitting 100% and mechanical harvesting reaching approximately 90%, according to the Xinjiang Cotton Association.

Since the 1990s, Xinjiang has steadily developed into China's largest cotton production hub. The cotton-related industries, encompassing planting, processing, and spinning, have become essential for improving the livelihoods of local communities.

Overall, China's cotton production topped 6.16 million tonnes in 2024, marking a nearly 10% year-on-year increase. This growth underscores the pivotal role of Xinjiang in the national agricultural landscape.
