China is on track to achieve a historic grain output of more than 700 million tonnes in 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced on Friday. This milestone marks the first time the nation's grain production is expected to surpass this figure.
The projected harvest builds on nine consecutive years of maintaining grain output above 650 million tonnes, underscoring China's commitment to ensuring food security and agricultural sustainability.
As of now, the summer grain and early rice harvests have been successfully completed, yielding 149.78 million tonnes of summer grainsāan increase of approximately 3.63 million tonnes compared to last year. Early rice production has remained steady at around 28.2 million tonnes.
The autumn grain harvest is progressing robustly, with about 82.5 percent of the crops already harvested by Thursday. This strong performance indicates the likelihood of a bumper harvest this year, according to the ministry.
The consistent growth in grain production reflects advancements in agricultural practices and effective policy measures aimed at boosting yields and supporting farmers across the country.
