China’s Mid-Autumn Festival Sparks New Consumption Trends and Travel Boom

China celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival with remarkable economic vitality across its tourism, film, and consumer goods markets during the three-day holiday from September 15 to 17. This vibrant period highlighted the country's robust consumer activity and set the stage for continued growth as the National Day \"golden week\" approaches in two weeks.

On September 16, the second day of the festival, cross-regional people movement reached an impressive nearly 200 million trips, according to data from the Ministry of Transport reported by China Central Television. Railway stations saw a single-day passenger volume of approximately 11.8 million, supported by the addition of 604 passenger trains to accommodate the surge.

Road travel was equally dynamic, with over 180 million trips recorded. The majority of these were short- to medium-distance self-driving journeys, and notably, new energy vehicles accounted for nearly 60 percent of the travel. In the aviation sector, there were 13,781 flights across the country, carrying a total of 1.55 million passengers.

Comparatively, on the first day of the festival, September 15, total cross-regional people movement reached 215.92 million trips. This figure represents a 37.9 percent increase from the same period in 2023 and a 13.3 percent rise compared to the same timeframe in 2019, showcasing a strong rebound in travel activities.

Looking Ahead: National Day Golden Week

As the Mid-Autumn Festival winds down, excitement builds for the upcoming National Day \"golden week.\" Train tickets for the 2024 National Day holiday have officially gone on sale since Tuesday morning. This year's golden week is expected to feature a blend of tourism, family visits, and student travel, with railway passenger traffic projected to remain high. Authorities anticipate that the positive momentum from the Mid-Autumn Festival will continue, driving further economic activity and travel enthusiasm across the country.
