Chinese Mainland Unveils Ambitious Green Transition Goals by 2035

The Communist Party Central Committee and the State Council of the Chinese mainland have introduced a comprehensive set of guidelines aimed at accelerating the green transition across all facets of economic and social development.

According to the newly issued guidelines, the primary objectives include achieving significant progress in the green transition by 2030 and establishing a green, low-carbon, and circular economic system by 2035. These efforts are part of the broader goal to realize a Beautiful China.

The guidelines outline numerous initiatives, such as optimizing territorial space development and protection, promoting green and low-carbon transitions in the industrial and energy sectors, and advancing sustainable practices in transportation and urban-rural development.

Concrete targets have been set for various sectors. By 2030, the energy conservation and environmental protection industry is expected to reach a scale of approximately 15 trillion yuan (about $2.1 trillion). The proportion of non-fossil energy in total energy consumption will increase to around 25%, and the installed capacity of pumped storage hydropower will exceed 120 million kilowatts.

Additionally, the guidelines aim to reduce the carbon emission intensity of commercial transport by about 9.5% per unit of turnover compared to 2020 levels. The annual utilization of bulk solid waste is targeted to reach approximately 4.5 billion tonnes, with a 45% increase in the output rate of main resources compared to 2020.
