China Warns U.S. Trade Moves Could Backfire on American Auto Industry

In a strong response to the U.S. government's recent actions, China has criticized the move to restrict Chinese vehicle imports, labeling it as \"unprecedented action.\" Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that politicizing trade issues could harm the U.S. auto industry itself.

The White House announced an investigation into whether Chinese vehicle imports pose national security risks, particularly concerning \"connected\" car technology. President Joe Biden described the investigation as an unexpected step.

Mao Ning urged the U.S. to adhere to market economy laws and fair competition principles, calling for an end to what China views as overreaches of national security concepts and discrimination against Chinese businesses. He highlighted that Chinese automobiles have gained global popularity through technological innovation and quality, not unfair practices.

Reflecting China's robust automotive sector, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reported that China exported 4.91 million vehicles in 2023, positioning itself to become the world's largest auto exporter.
