This week, the Chinese mainland expressed strong dissatisfaction with U.S. approval of a large-scale arms sales plan to the Taiwan region, calling the move a serious violation of the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques.
At a Friday press briefing, Major General Jiang Bin, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense of the Chinese mainland, said the U.S. announcement had severely undermined China-US strategic mutual trust. The Chinese mainland has lodged solemn representations with the U.S. side, he added, stressing that complete reunification is an irreversible historical trend that no force can stop.
Jiang accused 'Taiwan independence' secessionist forces of putting Taiwan people’s safety at risk to benefit U.S. arms dealers, a strategy he warned would lead to self-destruction. He also urged the U.S. to honor its commitment not to support 'Taiwan independence' and immediately halt arms sales to the Taiwan region.
The spokesperson for the Chinese mainland’s Foreign Ministry, Guo Jiakun, reiterated that such arms transfers constitute blatant interference in internal affairs and severely harm peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese mainland has lodged a stern protest at the earliest opportunity, Guo said, emphasizing that core interests brook no infringement and the Taiwan question tolerates no interference.
Guo warned that arming the Taiwan region would face serious consequences and pointed to 'Taiwan independence' secessionist activities by the Lai Ching-te authorities and external interference as the real threats to cross-strait peace. 'No one or no force should underestimate the strong will and ability of the Chinese government and people to safeguard our sovereignty and territorial integrity,' he added.
The Chinese mainland’s People's Liberation Army has vowed to strengthen combat readiness and take resolute measures to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity, firmly thwarting secessionist activities and external interference, according to the defense spokesperson.
