Taiwan Opposition to Propose Impeachment of Leader Lai Ching-te

On Friday, legislators from the Kuomintang and Taiwan People’s Party held a press conference in regional capital Taipei City to announce their plan to propose the impeachment of Lai Ching-te, leader of the Taiwan region. This marks the first formal move by the opposition to challenge Lai’s leadership in the legislature.

At the event, opposition lawmakers accused Lai of recent controversies in his administration, though they did not disclose specific charges. The legislators said they will submit the impeachment motion to the regional legislature in the coming days, setting the stage for a heated political clash.

The Kuomintang and Taiwan People’s Party, which together hold a significant number of seats in the legislature, argue that impeaching the leader of the Taiwan region is necessary to uphold accountability and restore public trust. Lai Ching-te has yet to respond to the announcement.

Observers say the move underscores rising tensions in the Taiwan region’s divided legislature and could shape debate in upcoming sessions. No official response from Lai’s office was available at the time of publication.
