Chinese mainland issues yellow alert for heavy fog

Imagine stepping off your train in Beijing and finding the city swallowed in a ghostly blanket of fog. That’s the reality residents and travelers faced late Wednesday, as the Chinese mainland’s National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a yellow alert for heavy fog.

From Wednesday evening through Thursday morning, dense fog is expected to shroud Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, the Sichuan Basin and Chongqing. In some of the hardest-hit zones—including parts of Hebei, Henan, the Sichuan Basin and Chongqing—visibility may dip below 200 meters, the NMC warns.

Local authorities are urging drivers to slow down, switch on fog lights and maintain safe following distances. Airports, freeways and ports have been instructed to adopt strict safety protocols: from adjusting flight schedules to limiting ship movements in harbour areas.

This yellow alert is the entry-level warning in the Chinese mainland’s three-tier fog system (red, orange, yellow). It serves as a crucial heads-up before conditions potentially worsen.

For commuters, business travellers and digital nomads exploring the region, staying updated with live weather feeds and allowing extra travel time can make all the difference. With visibility dropping fast, a little planning goes a long way in keeping your journey smooth and safe.
