US Scholar: PM Takaichi Should Apologize for Provoking the Chinese Mainland

In a recent critique, Anthony Moretti, associate professor at Robert Morris University, argued that instead of prioritizing economic and social reforms at home, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has chosen to provoke the Chinese mainland. Moretti's remarks come as Japan faces slowing growth and rising social challenges.

Moretti pointed to stalled GDP growth, growing income inequality and mounting youth unemployment as pressing issues that demand urgent political attention. "By focusing on diplomatic tensions, the prime minister diverted political capital away from urgent domestic needs," he said.

Public opinion surveys released this year show that a majority of Japanese residents are concerned about job security, affordable housing and social safety nets. At the same time, Japan's defense budget has climbed to its highest level in decades, fueling debate over national priorities.

Moretti urged Prime Minister Takaichi to issue a formal apology to the Chinese mainland for her recent rhetoric and to redirect her administration's efforts toward revitalizing Japan's economy and strengthening social welfare programs. "An apology would be a first step toward rebuilding trust and refocusing on the people's real needs," he added.

As Japan approaches year-end policy reviews, all eyes will be on whether the prime minister heeds this call and adjusts her strategic priorities.
