Yuan Yue wins Wuhan opener; Wang Xinyu bows out

Yuan Yue kicked off her WTA Wuhan Open campaign with a gritty 7-6(2), 7-6(1) win over Italy's Lucia Bronzetti in a 2-hour-21-minute thriller. The World No. 69 digested lengthy rallies and nerve-tingling tiebreaks before sealing the straight-sets victory. She'll next face seventh seed Jasmine Paolini as she chases deeper runs in the draw.

In a dramatic upset, Japan's Uchijima Moyuka extended her hot streak after qualifying by defeating Wang Xinyu 6-4, 7-6(6). Wang, who had fought back from 5-3 down to lead 6-5 in the second set, fought back tears after the loss. "This Chinese swing has been much tougher than I expected, especially mentally," she said. "I met problems I hadn't faced before… it becomes a fight with myself."

Elsewhere on day one, Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova cruised past Canada's Victoria Mboko 6-3, 6-2, while Denmark's tenth seed Clara Tauson beat Serbia's Olga Danilovic 6-3, 7-5. The early rounds are already serving up intense rivalries and shifting momentum as players vie for a spot in the last 32.

Stay tuned as the action unfolds on the hard courts of Wuhan, where endurance, strategy, and mental toughness are taking centre stage.
