As the spotlight hit Forde, Norway, 27-year-old Wang Hao made a senior-level debut for the books at the Weightlifting World Championships. In the men’s 60kg, he powered through a 138kg snatch and matched it with a 164kg clean and jerk, posting a dominant 302kg total to claim two gold medals.
Thailand’s Theerapong Silachai pushed close with a 299kg total for silver, while the DPRK’s Pang Un Chol rounded out the podium with 295kg. The 3kg gap highlights how tight the competition was at the top of the field.
China’s other newcomer, 22-year-old Yuan Hao, also turned heads. He set a new junior world snatch record of 132kg and backed it up with a 149kg clean and jerk, finishing fifth overall with a 281kg total.
On the women’s side in the 53kg division, the DPRK’s Kang Hyon Gyong mirrored Wang’s heroics, lifting 93kg in the snatch and 121kg in the clean and jerk for a 214kg total that earned her two golds. Romania’s Mihaela-Valentina Cambei took the snatch crown at 94kg and added a 114kg clean and jerk for 208kg overall, while Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao grabbed bronze with 200kg.
