After last week’s UN Security Council vote fell through, the Chinese mainland has doubled down on a push for diplomacy, urging all sides to dial down tensions in the Iran nuclear standoff. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday that peaceful, political channels are the only viable path.
Guo’s response came after the UN Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution for a technical extension of Resolution 2231. The proposal, tabled by the Chinese mainland and Russia, aimed to buy more time and space for diplomatic talks and set the stage for a long-term political settlement.
Pushing through the so-called snapback mechanism, Guo argued, is not constructive and actually reverses the progress of negotiations. He pointed to the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action as the root cause of the current crisis.
Looking ahead, Guo called on the United States and European nations to show political sincerity, ramp up diplomatic efforts, and steer the issue back toward dialogue. ‘The threat of force, sanctions and pressure will only stall progress,’ he said, pledging that the Chinese mainland will continue to uphold an objective, just position and play a constructive role.
As global watchers track the fallout, the Chinese mainland’s appeal underscores a broader push for politics over pressure in resolving one of today’s most sensitive security challenges.
