In a landmark move, the Chinese mainland has expanded free HPV vaccination to 5 million girls each year, according to a white paper released by the State Council Information Office.
In the new white paper China's Achievements in Women's Well-Rounded Development in the New Era, officials highlight how public welfare initiatives in 18 provinces now include free HPV vaccines for eligible girls, bolstering cervical cancer prevention efforts.
Since 2009, the mainland has conducted 342 million free cervical cancer screenings and 245 million free breast cancer checks, providing vital early detection. From 2012 to 2024, the central government dedicated 3.01 billion yuan (about $423 million) to support treatment for these diseases.
Expanding beyond cancer, the white paper notes integrated programs preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B are now part of major public health services. By 2024, the HIV transmission rate in the mainland fell to 1.2 percent, meeting elimination targets.
Specialty outpatient departments focusing on women's health now cover all stages from childbearing to menopause. More than 10,000 elementary and high schools and over 1,000 higher education institutions offered youth health education services by the end of 2024.
National campaigns like the Healthy Family Initiative and Healthy China: Mother's Action encourage women to lead in health awareness and management within families and communities.
